The federal Social Security program provides lifetime monthly income for qualified workers when they reach full retirement age, for surviving spouse and children under 18 years of age, and for workers who are disabled and some spouses and children. Social Security pays benefits to 89% of the US population aged 65 and over; it is the major source of income for two-thirds of its beneficiaries. Without Social Security, 40% of those ages 65 and older would be in poverty.
